How to correctly remove hair from a bikini line

In 1946 Louis Réard unveiled his “Bikini”, a two piece swimsuit that shocked the world not only for its leggy look, but because it exposed the wearer’s navel! Named after the South Pacific atoll where the US were performing atomic bomb testing, these four triangles of material (totalling only 30cm²!) took the world by storm despite initial resistance.

The need to remove hair from these newly exposed areas led to a new term: ‘the bikini line’, and with it, yet another thing women would have to start thinking about.

Luckily, keeping your bikini line well-groomed and hair-free is no hassle at all thanks to new methods of home hair removal wax and depilatory cream options. Let’s take a look at these methods to ensure bikini hair removal is as quick, easy and pain-free as possible.

Waxing is one of the best bikini line hair removal options because the hairs are removed from the root, meaning that they take up to 28 days to grow back. They also grow back softer and finer over time, meaning less discomfort for you.

Two of the best home wax methods we recommend can be separated into cold and hot wax treatments. For a quick bikini line tidy up, Veet® Professional Wax Strips for Sensitive Skin - Face Bikini & Underarm* are perfect. The wax and ideally sized strip come in one package and all you have to do is pull them apart with your hands, apply to the area, and then pull them off with the EasyGripTM tab*, taking the hair with it. They can also be cut to fit your body’s contours, ensuring a great finish. For an all-over clean up, try Veet® PURE™ Sugar Wax Kit - Argan Oil*, Face and Body Sensitive Formula for those days when you have a little more time for self-care.

You can also try out Veet® PURE Cold Wax Strips for Bikini & Underarms*. for face, bikini & underarm areas. These strips are great for sensitive skin, made with 50% less chemicals compared to Veet® Easy-Gel Wax Strips (Only applicable to Wax Formula) for smooth results.

Hair removal creams are fast and convenient, they can start working from two minutes. These depilatory creams break down the hair and cause it to break off just below the skin, leaving you super soft and smooth for twice as long compared to shaving. The creams come in different formats, such as a tube, like Veet® PURE™ Hair Removal Kit for Bikini and Underarms*, or with a spatula applicator like our Veet® Professional Full Bikini Hair Removal Kit*, which is specially designed for the bikini line. Simply apply the cream to the bikini area, and after a couple of minutes, scrape a small amount off to see if the hair comes with it. If not, do the same every minute or so until all of the hair is gone. Do not exceed the time indicated in the instructions*. If you find one or two stubborn hairs won’t budge, then just pluck them to achieve perfect results.

Of course, there is always the dreaded option of shaving. This should never be your first option, as it can cause ingrown hairs, as well as dark undergrowth and black dots making it very difficult to get a clean line – and we haven’t even mentioned the itching! However, as we all know, sometimes there’s no other option...just be careful not to irritate your skin.

With any home hair removal method, it is recommended that you test on a small patch of skin to ensure that you won’t have a reaction. After you remove hair from your bikini line, avoid scented or harsh soaps or moisturisers for twenty-four hours afterward. It’s also recommended that you avoid tight or scratchy underwear for this time to stay free of irritation. For best results, exfoliate twenty-four hours before. Immediately prior to the treatment, wash the area with warm water before drying it carefully to open up all your pores. This makes the process much easier and effective, ensuring your skin is left beautiful and bikini-ready.
